Renovated barn garden
Complementing a 17th Century barn

The brief was to create three connecting beautiful, low-maintenance gardens to complement the recently renovated barn conversion. Entertaining space was of primary importance, along with the integration of a separate garden for future holiday accommodation, a drive with electric gates, and an uncovered well. The site was originally a concrete farmyard,
prone to flooding, with hydrophobic soil that had not seen the light of day for many decades.

Further aims were to: provide my clients with densely planted areas for privacy, encouraging them out and the wildlife in; be sensitive to the surrounding environment, and adaptive to
the extremes of weather we now experience.
Other important aspects included: a sufficient drainage system, covered and uncovered entertaining spaces, and planting that is easy to manage with a little guidance.
From a sad grey space to a happy green sense of place.

The oak planters have been designed to discreetly incorporate an existing well and provide planting areas to soften and surround the terrace.

From a hole in the ground to a carefully-built brick well with a safety grill and soft lighting.
