Modern country garden

This garden was created from a blank canvas, beginning life as a field and sugar beet pad.
My clients had recently commissioned the build of their new home in this beautiful location,
and were keen to be surrounded by a contemporary, naturalistic garden that complements
the landscape and provides some shelter from the wind, without compromising the unbroken
views. Wheelchair access throughout the garden and copse was a key objective.

The sinuous shapes of the drive are surrounded by formal lawns, drifts of bulbs, rusted steel edging and wildflower areas. The more solid forms of Portuguese laurel hedges are planted to connect garages, outbuildings and house together.

I designed a sympathetic transition of planting from the gravel drive to the copse at the back of the property with a woodland ‘corridor’, visually connecting these areas. To echo the landscape and scenic shapes beyond we used repeat-planting with ornamental grasses, bulbs and shrubs. The greenhouse with small kitchen garden and chicken house was an essential practical element, as was the elevated decked area for outdoor yoga and enjoying unobstructed views across the landscape.
Nestled in the Norfolk countryside

This is a garden that now provides privacy and a connection
with the wider landscape.

A well maintained lawn with a margin of long grass, wildflowers and bulbs.

An island with weeping pear and water feature is set within the drive, breaking up the gravel.

Strong enough to deal with the wind, and secure enough to keep out the mammals.
